We are a grassroots initiative that is making a change here in Calgary. It began 1 Year ago with the vision of recognizing our vulnerable brothers and sisters of this earth who are currently experiencing or affected by homelessness by providing them with love and acceptance. We wanted to offer the comfort of food and an abundance of love and positivety that are so often not experienced by many individuals. We began hosting ‘Fiestas’ in downtown Calgary every Saturday. Within 5 months of doing so, our Facebook page has grown to over 2000 members and each week, 20-45 people (many of whom had never met before and consist of all races, religions and backgrounds) get together and bring food as well as physical donations that have been collected such as blankets, gloves, winter jackets, boots, socks, personal care products, gift cards, Christmas presents as well as over 2500 sandwiches or bagged lunches to our brothers and sisters. We have had more than 48 Fiesta’s to date and have shared meals with thousands of people. The deep and powerful connections we are making with each other, as volunteers or guests, is changing our world as well as the worlds of everyone involved. Our volunteers are encouraged to bring their children so that they may be aware of the need for change and as our next generation, they can provide that change. We are looking forward to continue providing love to all humans, continuing to increase awareness of the issue of homelessness, advocating for transitional housing approval as well as networking with other Grassroots initiatives to ensure that everyone can work together for a greater good.
